The Tate Gallery: an illustrated companion
The Tate Gallery - an illustrated companion to the National Collections of British & Modern Foreign Art.

This book was published on the occasion of the opening by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 24 May 1979 of the largest extension ever made to the building of the Tate Gallery.

Its purpose is to celebrate this opening, to introduce the Gallery to new visitors and to remind friends of long standing that many splendid works have been acquired over the last thirty years. Many of these have been seen only briefly or are now shown for the first time.

Both the Historic British Collection and the Modern Collection have been entirely rehung you take advantage of the 50 per cent addition al exhibition space provided by the new building and are shown more fully than ever before. Even so, many interesting works had to be excluded because there is simply not enough space to show them and we look forward to the time when a new building will rise on the site of the old Military Hospital next door - a site which the government has allowed for future development of the Tate. In the meantime part of the hospital building is being refurbished so that it can be used to carry us over the interval before new building can begin.
