North of the 26th edited by Helen Weller
A collection of writings, paintings, drawings and photographs from the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions.

Edited by Helen Weller with assistance from Roy Hamilton and John Harper-Nelson

This is the book of the North. It has been written, every word of it, by those who live there, who once lived there, or who have been there on official missions.

The north of W.A. Has always exercised a powerful influence on the minds of Australians. The pioneering spirit which has continued through cyclone, flood and drought down to today, and the people who, living through it all, have forged the history of this sprawling area - these are the raw materials of North of the 26th.

Over 120 people have written this book, painted and sketched it, or researched for it. It is not a dry history of a dry region. It is not a collective diary. It is not simply a series of pen portraits of the pioneers. It is none of these things, because it is all of them.

Two ex-Premiers of W.A. (The Hon. F.J. Wise and Sir Hal Colebatch, C.M.C.) have written fascinating accounts of their experiences in the north, published here for he first time. The Broome pearling muggers, the horrors of the World War bombings, the Onslow cyclone, the making of Derby, Roebourne and Wyndham, and the new iron ore towns - it is all in this book.

But also here are the poets and artists of the north. Poems by Dame Mary Durack, Ruby Penna, C.T. Cassidy and many others capture the harsh beauty of the north in words, and Daphne Jones, Maggie Churnside and Hal Missingham, among others, bring the artist’s eye to bear on its superb landscapes.

No historian of the north will be without this book. Nor will anyone who lives there. But for those who do not, here will be found the full flavour and excitement of he rough yet ready existence “up there”, North of the 26th
