Meeting Lily by Sarah Woodhouse
Life had been tranquil before Molly Baghot arrived, and Nan wishes it would be so again. She had come to Italy for her husband’s health and after his death decided to stay on and turn the Villa Giulia into a small hotel. English guests come and go, admiring the views of the hills chequered all shades of green, enjoying Maria’s cooking and escaping the Italian sun in the dappled shade of the terrace under the vines.

But when Major Baghot dies in Nan’s best bed, his widow Molly, a little mad and surprisingly cheerful, seems more inclined to go on long walks and picnics than mourn her husband; and she refuses to leave. Then Graziella, a convent girl from the village who helps in the pensione, falls in love with a local Catholic priest. Nan’s friend Dr Fortuno, usually practical, attentive and soothing, appears to be making a fool of himself over a pretty guest. And when the long-awaited arrival of the elusive Lily is repeatedly postponed, and Graziella disappears, all that Nan thought settled and safe is turned askew.

In Meeting Lily Sarah Woodhouse has written a delightful novel of manners and mysteries, with the lovingly drawn characters, graceful humour and subtle creation of atmosphere and emotion that have won her much acclaim.
