George Johnston A Biography by Garry Kinnane
George Johnston is best known as the author of the best-selling and award-winning My Brother Jack, a novel that explores - through the lives of two brothers - two Australian myths: of the man who loses his soul as he gains fame and material success, and of the man who sees the justification of his life in the fulfilment of the legend of chivalry and blood sacrifice that shaped his early years.

Admirers of My Brother Jack and Clean Straw for Nothing and A Cartload of Clay, which form a trilogy, and of Johnston’s life-story and that of his wife, the writer Charmain Clift, whose relationship was often compared with that of the charismatic and tragic Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, and to what degree their period of expatriation and return was a reflection of Australian cultural developments in the 1950s and 1960s.

In this biography, Garry Kinnane answers these questions by putting the story of George Johnston side by side with that of his alter ego, David Meredith, and shows how Johnston selected from people, places an events in his own life and used his creative imagination to transform them into literature.

There was ordinariness, romance and tragedy in the life of this man, Johnston, who early discovered his talent, but had to work doggedly throughout his life before he could create a work of genius.

The lives of Johnston and Clift were interwoven with the lives of writers and painters of their day - the Nolans, the Drysdales, the Crookes and others - and thus this biography is a major contribution to our knowledge of Australia’s artistic and literary establishment, past and present.
